COME JOIN US!
We're a bunch of young-at-heart pool rats who try to swim regularly...
...to stay fit and maintain our finely chiseled physique
...to burn calories in order to eat junk food
...to train for tri-athlete competition, (a few of us)
...to chase the elusive fountain of youth
...to enjoy each other's company,  (yeah, right)

Swimmers at Propstra that don't swim with "us"...
Bent John Barret Herman Kristen Rich

SOME INTERESTING, BUT RELATIVELY USELESS SWIMMING FACTS:

2500 B.C. - First Egyptian hieroglyphics depict swimming.  (By the looks of a few of us, we were there when the picture stories were etched .)

78 A.D. - Romans introduced swimming to Britain as a manly social event. (Back then, as today, real men wore speedos.)

14th Century - Medieval knights mastered swimming in armor. (Does a pull-buoy count?)

1845 - First swimming championship debut in Sydney.  (The Australians' swimming skills are said to be passed on genetically as part of the fleeing-from-the-scene-of-a-crime developed and frequently practiced by their forefathers.)

1875 - Matthew Webb was the first person to swim across the English Channel.  Fuelled by beef tea and beer, he covered the 38km stretch in 21 hours and 41 minutes.  (Beer???)

1896 - The first Olympic Gold Medal in swimming was won by Alfred Hajos from Hungary in the 100 meter freestyle event with a time of 1:22.2   (Currently, many of the "Fossil Squad" swim several 100's of this 100 record time repeatedly in a workout!)

1911 - Duke Kahanamoku set a United States National Record in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 55.8  (The current U.S. National Record in  the 100 yard breaststroke is 51.86)

1924 - Johnny Weissmuller set 67 world records.  He later became 'Tarzan' in early Hollywood movies.  He was the first person to break a minute in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 59.0  (In case you didn't know, a hand touch was required at the turn versus today's common use of the foot touch flip turn!)

1950 - The Butterfly was introduced as a racing stroke. (The stroke was born from competitors using over water arm recovery for the breaststroke.)

1960's / 70's - Goggles, now commonly used by swimmers, became popular.  Electronic timing replaced stop watches in championship meets.  Keifer lane lines were introduced to help reduce waves and splashing.  Soap box starting blocks were replaced with the unique starting platforms.

2002 - Anthony Ervin set a United States National Record in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 41.62  (Currently, many of the "Fossil Squad" swim 50's of this 100 record time repeatedly in a workout!)

Who is the only swimmer to hold an American record in every event and win a national title in every stroke?  (Answer:  Tracy Caulkins successfully accomplished this incredible feat between 1978 - 1984.)
