When the Indians became more threatening, Richard Hall and many other men collected their families at night, put them in canoes and silently paddled down the river to Fort Augusta, where they remained until peace was restored. Later, when the Halls returned to their home they found their houses burned and stock driven away. At once the families went to work and erected new buildings and commenced life anew. |
