Retired Carpenter. Son of Benjamin and Polly (Nye) Hafer of Pennsylvania. Preceded in death by wife Sarah, survived by children including two sons.
During the Civil War, Charles served the Union in three different units: as a private for three months in 1861 in Company C, 7th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry; as a private for six months in 1863-4 in Company I, 5th Independent Battalion, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry; and as a Corporal in Company F, 13th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (January 31, 1864 - July 4, 1865).
Charles spent his last days at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio.

Charles Nelson Hafer and Phoebe Jacquelyn "Jackie" Browne were married on 13 December 1955 in Berks County, PA. Phoebe Jacquelyn "Jackie" Browne18 was born on 15 February 1937 in Kentucky. She died on 27 May 2008 at the age of 71 in Tennessee. Jacquelyn (Browne) “Jackie” Hafer, 71, Manchester, Tenn., passed away in the Alive Hospice at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tenn. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Hafer. Mrs. Hafer was born in Paducah, Ky., a daughter of the late Jack and Juanita (Felts) Browne. Don't believe she ever used the Phoebe first name, not with Social Security. Surviving are a son, Craig (Dawn) Hafer, Manchester; and a daughter, Michelle (Joe) Green, Beechgrove, Tenn. Other survivors include four grandchildren: Chad Hafer, Melody Graham, Christina Haithcock and Tiffany Rouse; and four great-grandchildren: Nikki Graham, Ellie Graham, Briggs Haithcock and Baylee Haithcock. Mrs. Hafer was also predeceased by a daughter, Phoebe Rouse.
